Trumpeter and songwriter. He served as musical director to Ray Charles in the early-1950s, but left the band because he could not abide the rampant drug use of Charles and most of his band mates. Thus, Richard became a high school music teacher in his hometown of Thibodaux, Louisiana, and later in White Plains, New York.
