Originally a UK blues-rock band evolving from the band that had backed its vocalist David Coverdale in his solo period following the break-up of Deep Purple, its first era was 1978 to 1984. A significant change of sound and direction in 1985 led to huge commercial success for Coverdale with his subsequent USA-based band including successions of international players.
