Pianist and composer. Powell started out as a jazz pianist, but developed muscular dystrophy in the late 1940s, which ended his career as a touring musician. Instead, Powell switched to composition. He initially composed neoclassical works and than began exploring atonality. Powell also was also a collegiate level music educator and was the founding dean of the California Institute of Arts' music department. In 1990, Powell won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his work "Duplicates: A Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra".
