Apron Strings

You list Cliff Richard's Apron Strings as the original. His version seems to be recorded in February 1959 and released in April 1959. However, a US release by an obscure artist named Billy The Kid was reviewed in Billboard on February 2, 1959. It's not very likely that Cliff ever heard that recording, but I believe that must be the first version.

Also, it's Cliff Richard and The Drifters - they hadn't changed their name to The Shadows yet (that goes for the whole album of course).

Original:

Song: Apron Strings

Artist: Billy The Kid (not to be confused with Billy The Kidd or Billy “The Kid” Emmerson)

Originally written by: Aaron Schroeder, George David Weiss

First release date: January or February 1959

Cover:

Originally written by: Aaron Schroeder, George David Weiss

Recording date: February 9 or 10, 1959

Language: English

First release: On audio album Cliff

Sorry, HDM, I have never seen your topic.

So, Billy The Kid (KAPP) had recorded the o.v., didn't he ? HE DID !!! (12/09/2011)

There's also a mystery of a non-released version by Curtis Hoback (Hobock)...What do you think of it seeing his son said his father had never recorded it even as a demo ? Very strange seeing this link :

It seems he did record it: http://www.myspace.com/curtishobacksunyears. The big question then is if he did so before or after Billy The Kid. I'm affraid that more research is needed to decide who did the first recording...

For now The Shadows have been changed to The Drifters.

For what it's worth...

"Billy The Kid recorded this song on 12 January 1959 (probably); it was released on 2 February 1959 on Kapp K-261X with the song "I Hardly Know Me" on the B-side."

I hold the answer. Cliff Richard's Apron Strings is the A-side of Living Doll, COLUMBIA 45-DB 4306, July 1959. Source taken from the inlay card of CLIFF RICHARD THE HIT LIST THE BEST OF 35 YEARS, 1994 (EMI UNITED KINGDOM (NL 7243 8 30917 2 0) including Living doll CD 1/1. Other songs from 09/58 until 02/79.

See atts : original 7" 45 rpm (A & B-sides)

Matrices : A : 7XCA 24877 45 / B : 7XCA 24889 45

+ the page which contains "July '59".

D : illegible (send to Bastien a format with more than 72 pixels square.

The date mentionned for Billy "The Kid" Emerson is :

Am.-writting : 1959/01/02 (for a very long time ago in this form).

Apron Strings

Billy the Kid version now added and set as original.

The credits for Cliff Richard and The Drifters have been changed in the meantime.

Hoback, who recorded as "Hobock", is not first anyway. He had cut two sides with Lu mid-1959.

http://rcs-discography.com/rcs/artist.php?key=hobo1000

His relationship with a major label like Sun was most likely exclusive, therefore the Lu recordings preceded his relationship with Sun. That MySpace article does read "after the Lu recordings were issued". We also see nothing in the late-1959 to 1960 period except the then-unissued Sun recordings, including "Apron Strings".
