Description

In addition to those already in the database, The Shadows Of Knight (The Shadows of Knight have covered the following songs:

On their first album 'Gloria' (Gloria Dunwich 666 1966 (full track listing: http://web.tiscali.it/wrongway/shadows/gloria.htm (this site doesn't seem to work with Safari but does with Firefox)):

1. I Got My Mojo Working (Got My Mo-Jo Working (But It Just Won't Work On You)

2. Boom Boom (Boom Boom

3. Oh Yeah (McDaniel) (Bo Diddley originally by Bo Diddley. I don't know much about Bo Diddley, but according to allmusic.com this was on his album Go Bo Diddley (Checker 1436) 1959. See also http://members.tripod.com/~Originator_2/career60s.html (section for 1966)

On their second album 'Back Door Men' Dunwich 667 1966 (full track listing: http://web.tiscali.it/wrongway/shadows/backdoor.htm):

1. Bad Little Woman (Tito Tinsley/Victor Catling/Roderick Demick/Brian Rosbotham/Herbie Armstrong), originally by the Irish band The Wheels (single: Columbia DB 7827 1966), see http://www.soybomb.com/BorderlineBooks/uk6070s/w4.html#The%20Wheels (this also contains details of Them covers by The Wheels). The Wheels were known as The Wheel-A-Ways in the US, where the single was released on Aurora. Also http://www.originals.be/eng/main.cfm?c=t_upd_show&id=372.

2. Hey Joe (Hey Joe, Where Are You Going

3. Peepin' And Hidin' (Reed). Again, I don't know much about Jimmy Reed, but while it seems this song was on his album Soulin' (Bluesway BLS 6009 1967) (http://www.bsnpubs.com/abc/bluesway.html) and released as a single in 1968 (Bluesway 61020) (http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/jreed.htm), it also seems to be the same song as the earlier Baby What You Want Me To Do with a new title (Baby, What You Want Me to Do Certainly the lyrics of Baby What You Want Me To Do at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/9769/rb/b/baby_what_you_want_me_to_do… (very ugly site, sorry) are pretty similar to what the Shadows Of Knight sing, allowing for blues improvisation, transcription errors and changing the order of the verses. While looking for these lyrics, I found several references to Elvis recording the song as well, which is not in the database, some info here: http://users.pandora.be/davidneale/elvis/originals/list1.html#S9860.

4. Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day (Tommy Boyce/Steve Venet), originally by The Monkees (The Monkees on their album 'The Monkees' (The Monkees Lyrics at http://members.tripod.com/~colli/debut/tomorrows.html are what the Shadows Of Knight sing.

5. Spoonful (Spoonful

6. High Blood Pressure (Smith, Vincent). I own a Shadows Of Knight compilation that includes all the above songs but not this one. So I don't know it, but I guess it is a cover of High Blood Pressure by Huey "Piano" Smith & Clowns (link on their album 'Having A Good Time' (Ace LP-1004 1959) (http://www.bsnpubs.com/ace.html, link and previously a single B-Side (Ace 545 1958) (http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/bmarchan.htm). It seems many others have covered this song: http://warnerchappell.com/wcm_2/song_search/song_detail/songview_2.jsp?menu_stat…

The Shadows Of Knight also recorded a live album 'Raw 'n Alive At The Cellar, Chicago 1966' which was not released until 1992 (Sundazed 5006 (LP) & SC 11013 (CD)) (full track listing: http://web.tiscali.it/wrongway/shadows/raw.htm). As well as live versions of songs on their previous two albums, this includes the following:

1. Got To Get You Off My Mind (Solomon Burke/Dolores Burke/John Moore), originally by Solomon Burke (Solomon Burke released as a single in 1965 Atlantic 2276 (http://www.melingo.com/thesoulnet/sol.htm, also http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/sburke.htm) and on the album 'The Best Of Solomon Burke' 1965 Atlantic 8109. More details: http://warnerchappell.com/wcm_2/song_search/song_detail/songview_2.jsp?menu_stat… (This song has also been covered by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (link on their album 'I Don't Want To Go Home', Epic 1976.)

2. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

3. Don't Fight It (Wilson Pickett/Steve Cropper), originally by Wilson Pickett (Wilson Pickett released as a single in 1965 Atlantic 2306 (http://www.melingo.com/thesoulnet/pickett.htm, also http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/wpickett.htm), and on the album 'In The Midnight Hour' (In the Midnight Hour (this may be slightly earlier than the single).

According to your source it was written by Muddy Waters. The original your refer to was written by Preston Foster. What do you make of this?

Sorry, didn't notice that... I think http://web.tiscali.it/wrongway/shadows/gloria.htm is mistaken on this point. Muddy Waters did do an early cover of this song, and he's more well known than Ann Cole so it's probably an easy mistake to make...

The label of my Shadows of Knight compliation does credit the song to Foster. I can send a scan if you need one. It's definitely the standard "I've got my mojo working" that everyone's familiar with, the same song as covered by the Zombies in the list of covers you have for this song, for example.
