- First published in 1916 by Sherman, Clay & Co of San Francisco, California as a composition by Countess Ada de Lachau. It was described as a "Southern dialect song". The tune was featured as incidental music in the three act comedy "Come Out of the Kitchen" that opened Oct 23, 1916. It's not clear who actually performed it back then.
