- First published in the hymnal "Christmas Carols Old and New", edited by Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer. The words of "What Child Is This?" are often said to have been taken from Dix's poem "The Manger Throne", but these origins are possibly debatable as both "The Manger Throne" and "What Child Is This?" were included as separate entries in "Christmas Carols Old and New".
