- A composer, conductor, music teacher, lecturer and folksong collector, whose research, publications and educational programmes led to him being credited as "the founding father of the English folksong revival" in the early Twentieth Century. In addition to traditional song, he promoted traditional dance (founding the English Folk Dance Society in 1911), preserving many works and customs that might otherwise have been lost. His fieldwork included a two year visit to USA where he collected folk songs in the Appalachians.
