Later in the 1960s, he started directing and acting in films as well as screenwriting. He is also a playwright and has appeared as a stage actor. Allen is best known for his films. He has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards, and won three Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and one for Best Director.

Allen also plays New Orleans-style jazz clarinet and has had a regular gig playing with his band at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City for years. He has also released several records on which he is credited as leader or co-leader.
