She was born in Chicago and performed as a folksinger locally. She also sang with rock bands and for commercials. In 1985, she relocated to Glasgow, Scotland, and in 1989 Middleton started singing jazz. Although she continues to perform folk music, she more frequently performs as a jazz vocalist. In the early 2000s, she dropped "Pollock" from her professional name. She's also vocal coach.
