Guitarist and sometime singer. From Chicago, Asbell began his professional career performing and recording with many of the blues greats, including John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, and Magic Sam. In 1971, Asbell moved to Vermont as part of the "back to the land" movement, and he remains based in Vermont. Asbell expanded his performance and recording to jazz musicians (e.g., James Carter, Joshua Redman, Betty Carter) and folk musicians (e.g., Rosalie Sorrells, David Bromberg, Mary McCaslin). In 1978, he formed the jazz/fusion band Kilimanjaro. Asbell as taught guitar privately and at colleges, and he is currently associated with the University of Vermont and Middlebury College.
