- Fischer was institutionalized at age 16 and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disease. After escaping from the mental institution, Fischer lived on the streets of Los Angeles, selling passersby a cappella versions of his songs for a dime. Frank Zappa heard Fischer singing on the streets and was responsible for the production and release of his first album. Due to his mental problems, Fischer had difficulty maintaining relationships. After an extended paranoid episode in 2003, Fischer became a resident of an assisted living facility for mental patients, where he lived until his death.
