- Author, one of the most prominent satirical writers in the Weimar Republic and a collaborator of Brecht, Tucholsky etc. Persecuted by the Nazis, particularly Goebbels, and his books being burnt at the Nazi book burnings in May 1933, he fled the country and emigrated to the US, where he was employed by MGM and also wrote articles for "Aufbau". Though becoming a naturalized US citizen, he never adapted to the US and returned to Europe after the war. Back there, he was not able to replicate his earlier success and in 1981 he died in Zürich. To commemorate him, one of Berlin's main streets, where these days the BKA Theater (a.o. Geschwister Pfister's main stage) is located, was named Mehringdamm.
