- Music hall composer, the son of a Brighton coach builder. He added 'Le' to his name thinking he would be taken more seriously as a songwriter. In the 1870s he played in the orchestra pit at music halls in London and the provinces, but was eventually sacked for reading a newspaper. From 1883 he devoted himself to song-writing, at first partnering with Harry Adams before joining forces with John P Harrington, one of their first clients being Charlie Chaplin
