Comments: Born in Russia, Liter left Russia during the 1917 revolution for Harbin in northern China. He toured with a dance band as a pianist in Asia, ultimately settling in Singapore where he played at the Raffles Hotel, and hired Al Bowlly as a singer. While in Singapore, he became a naturalized British citizen. Thereafter, he played with many famous dance bands, joining the BBC as a pianist, conductor and arranger in 1941. Liter left the BBC ten years later to concentrate on performance and composing, including light classical music and film scores.
