Sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Cotton, Cotten was a blues and folk musician, singer and songwriter.
Hired by the Seegers in 1945 as housemaid in their Washington DC residence. As a child, she had learned to play the guitar and the banjo, but stopped playing when she joined the church in the 1920s. Working in a house full of musicians encouraged her to pick up the guitar again.
