He recorded in a trio with guitarist Byrd Moore and banjoist Emmett Bankston known as Earl Johnson and His Dixie Entertainers. When Moore left, Johnson replaced him with guitarist Lee "Red" Henderson and renamed the band, Earl Johnson and His Clodhoppers.
