American songwriter, whose mother emigrated to the USA from Erlich near Budapest in Hungary with her mother and sister, Bella. As the son of a cellist with the New York Symphony Orchestra, he was trained to be a concert pianist. In 1998, he was posthumously inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
