So called that because of their scarlet uniforms, was initially formed in San Severo, Puglia, by the composer Ferdinando del Re (born April 16,1839 - death January 16, 1887). But its first great triumph came in 1892 at the Columbian Exposition in Genoa. In USA, the group conducted by Eugenio Sorrentino, played its first concert at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 15, 1897.
Around 1897 or 1898 the group made around thirty recordings using Emile Berliner’s revolutionary Gramophone method.
