- Folk singer, guitarist, songwriter born in La Follette, Tennessee known as "The Singing Coal Miner". When he was thirteen he moved to East Kentucky to work as a coal miner. and disc jockey from Hazard, Kentucky. He started playing the guitar in 1933 when the miners where being organized by the UMW. He then started composing and singing coal mining-related songs. From the late 1940s until the end of the 1950s Davis performed regularly on local Kentucky radio stations and also dee jayed.
