- Pianist, band leader and songwriter born in 1898 in Jackson, Michigan. He started his show business career as a piano player for a music publishing house in Chicago. After he was discovered by bandleader Al Short, he played with Short and appeared regularly at several Chicago theaters as a band leader and emcee. Subsequently, he moved to Detroit where, in 1930 he formed a partnership with Ray Gorrell resulting in one of the largest musical offices in the United States.
