- Austrian Jewish composer of pop music, operetta and musical comedy born in Vienna. Having fled to France in 1938, he was captured there by the Nazis and sent to the Gurs and Milles camps. After the war he moved to New York City where he was a composer, New York Times music critic and a lecturer at Hunter College.
