Influential alternative rock band formed in 1986 by Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis, aka Frank Black) and Joey Santiago, while they were both students at the UMass. Bassist Kim Deal joined the group after responding to a now-famous ad: "Band seeks bassist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary. Please – no chops." The line-up was completed with the addition of drummer David Lovering, an acquaintance of Deal's. The group broke up acrimoniously in 1993. The Pixies reunited with their original line-up in 2004 for a series of anticipated and successful world tours. Kim Deal left the band in 2013, reportedly because she didn't want to record new material with the band.
