McCarthy started in his career in music as a singer in Boston, but move to New York, working on the Staff of a Tin Pan Alley music publisher. He was a charter member of ASCAP and on its Board of Directors from 1921 through 1929. McCarthy was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
