- Born in Hungary, Zoller's professional career as a musician started in Budapest during the Soviet occupation. In 1948, he moved to Vienna, where his serious jazz career began, moving to Germany in 1954. Urged by visiting American musicians to move to New York, he did so in 1959. Zoller was one of the first, if not the first, guitarist to play free jazz.
