Marian Anderson

Comments: African American contralto. Anderson rejected offers to perform in operas in Europe, preferring concerts and recitals. Among her repertoire were traditional American songs and spirituals. Anderson became important in the struggle for black civil rights after the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to let her perform in 1939 at Constitution Hall to an integrated audience. This resulted in her giving a nationally broadcast concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and attended in person by some 75,000 people. In 1955, Anderson became the first black person to perform at New York City's Metropolitan Opera.
