Shihab's birth name was Edmund Gregory, which he changed in 1947 when he converted to Islam. A baritone/tenor saxophonist and flautist playing and recording with many Jazz artists. In 1960, he settled in Sweden and mainly lived/worked in Europe until 1986 and also composed score music.
