One of he best known black gospel groups, the Dixie Hummingbirds were formed in 1928 in Greenville, South Carolina in 1928. In 1939 Ira Tucker joined the group and he became one of the most influential gospel singers. In the 1940s they were based in Philadelphia where they remained for more than a half century.
