- Double bassist; Grimes started as a bop player, but moved to free jazz, and then dropped out of sight in 1967. He was discovered living in a hotel in South Central Los Angeles in 2002. Bassist William Parker provided Grimes with a bass to replace the one Grimes had hocked an 1967, and he re-emerged as a bassist in 2003.
