Librettist, lyricist and writer, whose songs remain popular today. In the 1920s he became one of the most sought-after librettists and lyricists in Vienna working with composers like Franz Lehár and Paul Abraham. Almost immediately after the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, in mid-March 1938) he was arrested and deported to the Dachau concentration camp and later that year transferred to Buchenwald. In December 1942 he was murdered in Auschwitz III Monowitz, where he was beaten to death.
