Born in Detroit, Von Tilzer ran away from home at the age of 14 to join the circus. ("Tilzer" was his mother's maiden name, to which Tilzer added the "Von".) Von Tilzer was soon playing piano, calliope and writing incidental music for the circus performances. After a song he had written and sold became a big hit, Von Tilzer became a professional songwriter.
Von Tilzer was one of the original inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
