- Cellist. Katz is one of the first, and possibly the first, to establish the cello as a improvising solo instrument. Katz also played piano, on which he accompanied popular singers in the 1950s. Following World War II, he was the music director for the 7th Army in Europe. Katz was also an arranger and orchestra director.
