Stephen Emery was born in Maine and lived in New England for much of his life. In the early 1860s he studied music in Germany. In 1867 be began teaching at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Later he was appointed professor of Harmony and Counterpoint at Boston University. Many U.S. composers studied under Emery. He was the author of music text books as well as the composer of string quartets, sonatinas and other pieces for the pianoforte. He also wrote popular songs. One of these, a lullabye known as "Sleep, Baby, Sleep," was composed in 1869 and was a major hit that year. It was the second song recorded by Jimmie Rodgers in 1927 during his first recording session and it appeared on his first single.
