Helmore served as vice-prin­ci­pal and pre­cen­tor at St. Mark’s Coll­ege, Chel­sea, for 35 years. He also wrote about singing and edited and translated hymns and carols. In 1846 he was ap­point­ed mas­ter of the chor­is­ters in the Chap­el Roy­al.
