Jazz saxophonist, composer and arranger from Muskogee, Oklahoma. He worked with Jellyroll Morton and was an arranger for Glen Gray, Raymond Scott and Woody Herman. By the late 1940s he free-lanced as a vocal coach working with R&B groups, the Ravens and the Beavers. In 1950 he became director of the R&B departments for Decca Records and RCA Victor. A prolific songwriter, he often co-wrote with Howard Biggs.
