O'Daniel was a conservative Texas Democratic politician who served terms as both Governor of Texas and United States Senator from Texas, immediately preceding Lyndon Johnson. In fact, O'Daniel defeated Johnson in the 1941 special election in Texas for U.S. Senate.
Prior to his political career, O'Daniel worked for Burrus Mills, a flour-milling company, for which he bacame head of advertising. In this capacity, he hired the musicians who became The Light Crust Doughboys. O'Daniel, himself, wrote songs and sang for the group.
After the break-up of The Light Crust Dough Boys, O'Daniel formed another group to promote his own Hillbilly Flour Company. For a period in the 1930s, O'Daniel hosted a radio show heard throughout Texas and he became "Pappy" McDaniel after an oft repeated phrase heard on the show "pass the biscuits, Pappy".
The character Governor Pappy O'Daniel from the 2000 film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was loosely based on O'Daniel.
