Irish born, Gilmore came to the United States in 1848, where he settled in Boston and had a career in music. Gilmore was a cornet player,composer and bandleader and served with the United States Army during the American Civil War.
In 1858 he founded "Gilmore's Band", which he led until 1873, when he moved to New York City, as bandmaster of the 22nd Regiment. Gilmore took this band on acclaimed tours of Europe.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
