Austro-Hungarian composer, world famous for his operettas like Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow, 1905), Frasquita (1922), Paganini (1926), Der Zarewitsch (1927), Das Land des Lächelns (1929) and Giuditta (1934). Lehár's relationship with the Nazi regime was a controversial one. He had always used Jewish librettists for his operas and furthermore, his wife Sophie was Jewish, but Adolf Hitler was a great admirer of Lehár's music and after Joseph Goebbels' intervention Mrs. Lehár was given the status of "Ehrenarierin" (Honorary Aryan!) in 1938. After WW II Lehár always downplayed his activities during the Third Reich.
