- Senator Robert Byrd was the longest-serving senator and the longest-serving member in the history of the United States Congress. He was born in North Carolina but, after the death of his mother a year after his birth, he lived in West Virginia with an aunt and uncle. As a boy, he learned to play the fiddle and, when he entered politics in 1946, he performed as his campaign stops. In the 1970s he recorded an LP and played his fiddle on the "Hee Haw" television program.
