Lau is a pioneer of the so-called Mo lei tau ("Makes no sense"), a genre that developed in Hong Kong during the late 20th century. Mo lei tau (and Lau's films in general) mixes slapstick humor, dialogues full of Cantonese wordplays, parodies (and self-parodies), anachronisms, and cross references.
