Labor activist, illustrator and songwriter. Chaplin worked on the strike committee with Mother Jones in the violent 1912-1913 Kanawha County, West Virginia, coal miners strike. Thereafter, Chaplin became active in the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW0, known as 'The Wobblies'. In 1917 Chaplin and approximately 100 other Wobblies were convicted under the Espionage Act of 1917 for conspiring to hinder the draft and encourage desertion.
