Comments: Scammell had a career as a teacher, but he was also a poet, writer (particularly about his native Newfoundland), and singer. Scammell is credited as the first person to issue a commercial record for the Newfoundland market with his own "Squid Jiggin' Ground". The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council established a writing award in Scammell’s honor in 1985, and the school in his hometown of Change Islands was renamed the A.R. Scammell Academy in 1990. In 1987, Scammell was made a Member of the Order of Canada for “keeping Newfoundland history alive in song, verse and story.”
