sebcat I've followed the discussion on fictional characters, but am still a bit confused by it. What's the best way to handle this case, especially now that there's an entry for Grover?

Happy to help JoAnn artsinspired . Which bit of the guideline confuses you? Maybe pick up in the forum discussion?
What's the best way to handle this case, especially now that there's an entry for Grover?
The main thing is to credit the actual performing artists where they are known. You only need to create fictional artists as an entry in the database if they are an enduring fictional character (not stage musical) that has been performed by different artists over time.
sebcat Still a bit confused as to how to display this particular performance.
Question 1: Is Grover set up correctly? Currently, it says that Frank Oz voiced the character from 1970-2012 and Eric Jacobson took over afterwards. Paul said in his error report that Oz voiced the character until 1999 (which matches Wikipedia). Discogs is no help, as it lists them both as active.
Question 2: Assuming the 1999 date is correct and Eric Jacobson was voicing the character at the time of this 59th Street Bridge Song performance, how do I attribute the performance? Would it be a joint performance between The Muppets and Grover [voiced by Eric Jacobson]?
It looks to me as though this should be a joint performance between Grover and Elmo artsinspired . For Grover, you would credit both the fictional character (as there are entries voiced by different people in the database) and the real performer. Same for Elmo, again only voiced by different people for entries in the database. Let me know if that helps.
sebcat My first thought was a joint performance between Grover and Elmo. However, there is no artist Elmo.
Do you know who voiced Elmo in this case artsinspired ?
The simplest would be to credit the actual performers in this case, and credit The Monster in the Mirror to Frank Oz. But if you want to have an entry for Grover in the database, then you can set both up as joint performances with Grover. I don't think it's necessary, but I know some editors like to have entries for fictional characters
sebcat Probably Kevin Clash voiced Elmo, as he did that character from 1984 to 2012.
Still not sure how to set this up.
I’m not a fan of having entries for individual Muppets but I know some editors prefer that
In this case you just link the performer alias set up to both of the voice actors and the Grover page. Then make sure you select “mention artist” so the voice actors are displayed. The Muppet name will be repeated but I can’t see any way to avoid in this case.
In this case, we don't know who voiced Grover for this performance as Frank Oz and Eric Jacobson were actively voicing the character in 2007. So should I link the performance alias to Grover and Kevin Clash?
So should I link the performance alias to Grover and Kevin Clash?
Looks like that’s the only option. Is there no way to find out who voiced this performance though e.g. from the liner notes?
No liner notes that I can find. Linked performers to Grover and Kevin Clash.
Are we good now sebcat ?

Are we good now sebcat ?
Nearly but not quite artsinspired
1. I'd recommend checking the "mention artist" box for the alias, so that Clash shows up.
2. Add a comment explaining that Clash voices Elmo and an unknown voice artist voices Grover.
The comment is good artsinspired but the alias is still problematic. You’ve created an unused alias for Clash and not checked the “mention artist” box
Okay sebcat , I deleted the alias and changed the always mention performer thing for the Elmo alias from yes to no. Is this okay now?
JoAnn artsinspired it will only work if you select "mention artist" for the joint performer. It doesn't work for a blank alias unfortunately.
At the moment, Clash isn't showing as part of the performer alias. That's how you know that it isn't yet correct. You have to do it for the joint performer as shown above.
What name am I supposed to enter there, sebcat ? I think that's the confusion. It wouldn't allow me to click the "mention artist" box" without typing in a name.
It wouldn't allow me to click the "mention artist" box" without typing in a name.
You have to select the relevant alias first, as shown below. Then the alias name appears automatically.
