Carmen Twillie's version was on the original "The Lion King" soundtrack from 1994 and was the version played during the opening scene in the file. The lyrics are slightly different from the Elton John recording (which was on the soundtrack but not in the film).

There are 2 other songs in the film which had 2 versions on the soundtrack:

Can You Feel the Love Tonight was recorded by Joseph Williams and Sally Dworsky with Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella and Kristle Edwards (a version played during the film) as well as by Elton John (played over the closing credits) (Both added in the meantime). Also, I Just Can't Wait to Be King was performed by Jason Weaver with Rowan Atkinson and Laura Williams (the version seen in the film) as well as by Elton John (on the soundtrack alone). Again, both songs had variations in lyrics, but the same music and the same chorus. (Both added as well in the meantime)

Then of course, in 1997, the movie was made into a Broadway musical and a cast recording was released, with several songs from the movie, including the above 3 and more, covered by Mark Mancina and others.

And of course, this was not Disney's first or last foray into theatre. So "Beauty and the Beast", "Tarzan" and "Mary Poppins" all will have both film soundtracks, featuring original songs from the motion picture, and Broadway soundtracks, featuring songs from the musicals.

And if you ever want to keep byusy finding covers, just look at all the musicals made into movies or movies made into musicals over the last 80 years. And if that's not enough, then you can look at all the Broadway musicals which also had soundtracks from the London stage, and vice versa.
