History
I think we are getting this a little mixed up.
This group existed in three phases for our purposes, I think:
1) "The Miracles" - early '60s - including Smokey Robinson, but without his name separated as a headliner
2) "Smokey Robinson & the Miracles" - late '60s/early '70s - essentially same group, but different name
3) "The Miracles" - mid-'70s onward - Smokey Robinson is gone as lead singer to solo career, and group is recording without him as its own entity...
I don't think our current 'joint performances' set-up for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles is an accurate way of accounting for era 2 - because era 2 and era 1 are the same - and should all be treated as a single artist.
It had all been previously been handled by listing all three eras as the same artist as Smokey Robinson, which is also clearly inaccurate since he was not a part of era 3
I think the best solution is to mirror what we've done with "The Supremes" (whose story is similar). That means that we list all three eras of "Miracles" as a singular artist (with Smokey Robinson listed as a member from 1950-something to 1970-something) - "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles" can be listed as an alias and "The Miracles" as the main artist name. Smokey Robinson's solo career remains his solo career (with only a link to his membership in "Miracles"), just as Diana Ross has her own page - with no Supremes songs on it.
In reality, a lot of the "Miracles" songs will still end up on the Smokey Robinson solo page because he was so often the songwriter of their original tracks.
