Loving Arms

Error description

Loving Arms

Dobie Gray and Mentor Williams retained Drift Away's roots-oriented sound, and much of its studio cast, on the 1974 follow-up Loving Arms. The album's title track, written by Tom Jans, had previously been recorded by Rita Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson, and would subsequently be cut by Elvis Presley, Olivia Newton-John and Millie Jackson. Gray's heartfelt version, which opens with another distinctive Reggie Young lick, became a substantial hit in the U.K. and in South Africa, but stalled in the U.S.

Dobie Gray's album came out in 1973 and, while I'm not certain at all, I think that his recording of the song was the first, not Kris & Rita's. I would welcome feedback from those more informed.

Do you know the recording date for Dobie Gray's version ?

Kris and Rita's version was recorded ca April 1973 poss. at the A&M Recording Studio in Hollywood CA

"Lovin' Arms" was written by Tom Jans, who also was a recording artist for the A&M Label.

PS: in terms of release, Dobie's version was the first.

Mark replied the following via the mailing list:

Based off the attached I find it difficult to believe that Dobie Gray's version didn't come out first. I even saw it referenced in his obituary that he recorded this song and it had been covered by countless others. But again, half the sites say Coolidge/Kristofferson's came out first and half say Gray's.

The first charting song off the "Full Moon" Coolidge/Kristofferson album wasn't until 11/73 too. So I feel pretty comfortable saying that Dobie Gray's came out first. He had just charted with Drift Away in 1973 and it would have made more sense for Jans to let him record his song.

I actually think Olivia Newton John did the best recording of the song, then Elvis.
