Whatever Lola Wants

Currently the SHS database shows the original performance of "Whatever Lola Wants" was given by Gwen Verdon on May 5, 1955, the date of the Broadway opening of "Damn Yankees." The first release is also credited to Gwen Verdon on the original Broadway cast album, Damn Yankees . Neither is correct.

Dinah Shore performed "Whatever Lola Wants" on live television on Sunday, March 27, 1955. The program was Entertainment 1955, the first color special to emanate from NBC's Burbank television studios.

The original cast album was not released until May 1955. Dinah Shore's version (RCA Victor 47 6077) was released March 28, 1955, the day after she introduced it on TV. Versions by Sarah Vaughan (Mercury 70595 X45), The Mello-Larks (Epic 5 9101), Carmen McRae (Decca 9 29472) and Ginny Gibson (MGM K 11961) were issued almost simultaneously with the Dinah Shore version.

If there are no objections in the next day or two I will make these changes.

Dinah Shore's March 27, 1955 TV performance has been added and set as the first performance. Dinah Shore's RCA Victor single has been set as the first release. Sarah Vaughan's version was released the same day. Gwen Verdon's live performance has been deleted; her recorded version on the original cast album now appears as a cover version. Carmen McRae's version as been set as the first recording date.
