Lynn Loesser, real name Mary Alice Blankenbaker (b. 1917 in Indiana), was an aspiring nightclub singer (as Lynn Garland) before she married Frank Loesser (~1936). She was later a theatrical producer. She died in New York at age 70 in 1986. Loesser wrote this song in ~1944, and he and Lynn sang it privately at parties for some years before he sold it to MGM (over Lynn's objection).
Although 78discography dates the release "~1949" I think it may be earlier, but I can't quite prove it. Loesser's daughter implies that the recording was made before Loesser sold the song to MGM in 1948. See, A Most Remarkable Fella, by Susan Loesser (1993, Hal Leonard), pp. 79-81.
