Just so you know, this single was just added to Discogs ~3 months ago, so not sure how I could have been any more precise on Sep 2018. I do always appreciate fresh eyes for these and other contingencies....

I get it, however, I can't spend extra time searching for the causes of lacking a release or translator's name... Frankly, I don't like the rating feature much, as it looks like I came to criticise someone. That's not my goal. I know you're a conscientious contributor and I appreciate it.

It reads "[i]mprove your cover submissions by being a little more precise." How could I have done that in this (somewhat typical) situation? DB says the system is to catch editor candidates, but since I have refused several approaches already that suggests just not rating. Regardless, I treat this editor feedback as could have/should have. For any submission, yes, I technically could have checked every available resource in the known universe. Since the information has been on our typical sources for some time and was relatively easily found, it should have been found and provided. (That's legit.) On the other extreme, yes I could have learned 11th century Polish and combed thru the fiche at the Gdansk local library (i.e could have done), but that's probably something not to be reasonably expected (i.e. should have done).

As stated, it's not that uncommon for me to carry the ball 90 yards but either run out of play options or just need fresh legs for the last 10. In this specific case I was able to pretty much confirm that ABC covered XYZ, provide one or more non-original releases, and narrow down the likely original release to circa 1973 (on top of listening to the recording in full). I would bet that several editors have looked at this prior to ~3 months ago, couldn't find the non-existent single on Discogs/45cat, and dropped the matter.

As I see things, the process worked perfectly, namely I researched relatively thoroughly using sources then readily available, posted my findings (noting the info still needed), and waited for more info to hit the internet followed by someone with fresh eyes. My reward is a digital finger wag. This is not a good contributor experience, hence my reaction.

Well, I said I understand this. I didn't know you see "Improve your cover submissions by being a little more precise" in the message. At my point, it reads something like "Fair submission, lacking precise information". That was true. I think there are two possibilities how to solve this for the future: either rate all your submission as the best (regardless what it lacks), or don't rate them at all. I repeat I appreciate your conscientious approach, I don't blame you for carelessness, I just wanted to meet our system requirements. And I really don't want you to feel bad for that.

It's my understanding (from observation), most editors with whom have regular interaction know that I put in efforts to track down original release, translator, etc., but sometimes info just wasn't available or readily accessible to me (e.g. on some non-English source). When there is a "best I can do with this one", they just don't rate.

The other option is for me to just keep the recording buried in my notes until it's 100% ready, which may never come given my limitations. That would mean that your fresh eyes would have never looked or someone else would have to find and submit. Some of my finds are real proverbial needles in the hay, and I don't want to just keep buried or to toss back in the hay.

This is why I won't submit leads, which I haven't researched at all....

"When there is a "best I can do with this one", they just don't rate." - sounds fine, I'll comply. IMHO it's quite weird that we rate your submissions when everyone knows you always do your best. I think rating might make some sense when in comes to new submitters, but in your case, I don't see the point... Smile

I've been saying that for some time, but alas....

Anyway, sorry if I was too hard, but sometimes things set me off. We're all a bit off with the bug keeping us immobile....
