History
Interesting. The book Popular American Recording Pioneers, 1895-1925 says that the Zonophone release was first in April of 1905 and that Edison 9000 came in May of 1905.
Michael,
By mistake, I assumed, January 1905 for that Edison # 9000 release, was the release-date.
After a good look it's the recording date.
Sorry for the confusion.
PS still the comments need to be adjusted. Edison release was already in 1905, And also the Victor release (#4431) has to be changed (1905)

And in 1905 there was also a Columbia-release (#3146)

You can listen to many more versions here:

And the core idea is almost certainly older; supposedly it happened to one Anson H. Allen, a census-taker in New York in 1840; the event was chronicled in "Allen's Bear Fight Up in Keene," which includes the key line asking God not to help the bear.

Adjusted the comments for this release. Going to leave the credits alone for now since we don't have any further proof that Fairman didn't actually write it.
